What customers say?

“ Reviewing the coffee from Small Batch. Melbourne is ultra competitive in their coffee not just the importance of quality but we are now in the movement of ethically sourcing and celebrating socially positive and agriculturally sustainable options for our coffee. This place has been doing exactly that since 2009! I have tried Candy man and Golden ticket but recently I bought The Ones We love and was blown away. I drink Black, stovetop and found I actually needed less coffee for this seasonal blend. On the day I bought it they had just roasted bringing an even better depth and character to the blend. The packaging is all recyclable and or compostable. I reckon this is a winner not sure what I will try next but it is beating my usual favourite Rumble Roasters! ”

“ Small Batch Roasting Co greets you with the comforting scent of freshly ground beans the moment you step off the footpath. Inside, sunlight bounces off polished concrete floors and onto rows of hessian coffee sacks stacked beside the gleaming roaster. The space feels equal parts working roastery and neighbourhood hangout, with long communal tables up front and a quieter nook tucked near the retail shelves for anyone needing laptop time. Coffee is the clear headline. The house Espresso Blend lands rich and chocolaty, balanced by a citrus lift that comes through neatly in a flat white. Single origins rotate every few days; baristas are quick to explain tasting notes without slipping into lecture mode, and they pour filter flights if you want to compare origins side by side. Alternative milks sit ready on the bench and are textured with the same care as dairy, while a seasonal cold brew taps from a sleek chrome tower during warmer months. The small food menu punches above its weight. A Reuben toastie comes layered with brisket that melts into the rye, and the miso butter banana bread hits the perfect point between sweet and savoury. Pastries arrive daily from a local bakery and vanish by late morning, so early birds reap the reward. Service strikes a confident but unfussy note; staff greet regulars by name and newcomers with equal warmth, keep water jugs topped without prompting, and happily grind takeaway beans to your preferred method. Ambient music sits at conversation level, free Wi-Fi holds steady, and a row of power points along the wall makes lingering easy. For those on the run, grab-and-go cups move swiftly through a separate queue. With meticulous coffee, thoughtful food and a relaxed vibe that invites both quick pit stops and slow Saturday mornings, Small Batch continues to set the bar for Melbourne’s specialty café scene. ”

“ Been ordering coffee from these amazing folks for years. Love their beens. Love their roasts. On the rare occasions I have made it in the deli and coffee has been delightful and delicious. They always get me what I need (beans - good coffee beans). ”

“ Small Batch Roastery in Melbourne is a must for savory pastry fans. Their fermented cheese and chili pastry has an amazing balance of flavors, but the pepperoni croissant truly steals the show—it’s on another level. Flaky, flavorful, and with just the right amount of spice, it’s everything a savory lover could dream of. If you’re after unique, delicious pastries, this spot is worth the trip. Go get it! The coffee is solid too! ”

“ Delicious coffee. Close to my home so it's amazing to go by. In even early autumn days or autumn days it's good sitting outside and watching the trees or the people coming and going. I tried a croissant and it was a jewel; flaky, but didn't flake so much you get dirty with the croissant chips haha. It's clean to eat, fluffy and buttery. I think it wasn't a messy croissant eat so I remember that the most to be honest which is quite a lot delicious place and I'd love to try more danishes or pastries! ”

“ Not only do they serve excellent coffee, but their pastries are amazing too We even pre-ordered two pastries online, so we could just pick them up, super convenient Reuben Corissant (AUD 10.5) Pear and Geraldton Wax Danish (AUD 10) Batch Filter (AUD 5-6) We picked one savory and one sweet pastry, and both were delightfully crunchy with amazing texture, and the fillings were simply delicious Their daily batch brew changes beans everyday, we tried the Luis Octavio, which had fruity notes, and The Golden Ticket, which combined fruity notes with a chocolatey finish They also offer a variety of nutty and fruity beans to take home, perfect for coffee lovers ”

“ Small Batch is a lovely bakery tucked away in a back alley. I was mesmerized by the aroma from 100 meters away as I walked towards the cafe. The famous tiramisu tart was not in sight; I guess one needs to preorder before heading down. I tried their magic coffee, and it was a good and smooth cup of white coffee. I will return for their pastries again They have some benches and stools outdoor, sitting outdoors with the good sunny weather brings a different kind of serenity. Came back for the baked goods and the morning bun is ”

“ Considering the ubiquity of coffee joints in Melbourne, this is definitely considered a hidden gem. Tucked away in a small alley, you would miss it easily if not for the smell of coffee wafting through the whole alley and the Q of coffee drinkers standing outside eagerly waiting for their dopamine boost. Menu is simple with coffee, tea and pastries. No brunch menu served here, so the focus is just on good coffee and pastries. There are some shared bench seating outside to enjoy the coffee and maybe meet new coffee friends. The coffee brewed is definitely of a high standard than most cafes here, low acidity with only a slight hint of bitterness, but the coffee flavour shines through even through the oat milk. Atmosphere seating by the alley really gives us a hanoi alley cafe vibe but without the occasional bikes riding through. Even the restroom is small dark but cleaner. Le wife approves. ”
